Good example of how Coltrane could simultaneously madden and exhilarate. Private recordings are known of Coltrane playing Impressions before he recorded it with Dolphy, and private recordings are known of them playing it together, before the first original issue of Coltrane (ts) and Dolphy (as) playing Impressions was released on the LP “Trane’s Modes” (Impulse! IZ 9361-2) recorded live at the Village Vanguard on November 1, 1961. I’m fairly sure the video shown here was shot December 4, 1961 in Baden-Baden.
