The greatest concert I ever witnessed was the Charles Mingus Quintet at Howard University’s Crampton Auditorium in 1974. Mingus, George Adams, Don Pullen, Roy Brooks, I can’t think of the trumpet player’s name at this moment, but he played two horns at once. I was floored! It was the same week I met my good friend, trumpeter Rasul Siddik. Roy Brooks played a monster Blues solo on the saw. I had seen a bunch of the greats. Miles, Kool & The Gang, LaBelle, Sly & The Family Stone, Roberta Flack, The O’Jays, etc. But this concert made me know that I needed to pursue my life in the world of Jazz.
